When I begun my studies to become an NLP Trainer in 2015 I learned about Mindset expert Dr Carol Dweck. Dweck, Professional at Phycology at the Stanford University often talks about the power of mindset and how it plays a fundamental role in our performance.
So to take it all from the beginning, what is mindset?
Mindset is a set of beliefs. In other words, what you tend to believe about yourself, others, the world and what is true for you. Your beliefs do not necessary have to have any scientific proof to be true for you, your beliefs are simply what makes up your mindset. Your mindset is shaped by your earlier experiences, your values and how you have been raised.
According to Carol Dweck, you and I can adopt a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Let me get into what that is in a minute. But first, why is mindset important?
Mindset is important because it is the key to success! Your beliefs (your mindset) is strong and it influence and motivates you to feel, think and behave in different ways. So if you really long to date someone and fall in love, or you wish to expand your business, reach more people, become more self confident, but you don’t believe you can do it. Your mindset is working against your dreams. Because you will feel, think and behave aligned with what you believe. If your beliefs aren’t supporting you, it will be a real struggle to get where you wanna be!
But trust me, it doesn’t have to be a struggle. It can be easier than you think to get where you wanna be. The only thing you need to do is turn a fixed mindset into a growth mindset.
Have you ever thought:
”I do not have the capabilities I need to go do X”
”I am not good in X”
”If I have to work hard for this, means that I probably don’t have what it takes”
If you’ve ever been thinking anything alike this means that you’ve tried out what a fixed mindset looks like. How did it suit you? Did it feel good to have it?
My guess is that you most likely didn’t enjoy it very much and the truth is, many do not even know how to turn it around! So good you landed here in this blogpost!
A fixed mindset is a mindset where someone beliefs their talents can not be developed, they can not learn anything new in their life and only what they got will lead them to the success them want. People with a fixed mindset usually end up frustrated with a feeling of being stuck or falling short of their dreams.
On the contrary, a growth mindset is ALL about believing that you can grow with time, hard work and dedication. Someone with a growth mindset believes that anyone can learn how to figure anything out with the right resources. It is all about possibilities and to look for ways to learn and grow, even when situations do not turn out the way you thought.
Doubt thoughts that say ”you can’t”
Whenever you hear or think ”you can’t”, decide to doubt this thought and prove it wrong! You will directly access the growth mindset.
Choose to see your experience as positive
Whenever things do not work out in your favour ask yourself, ”what can I learn from this?”. You will end up collecting a lot of different teachings and insights.
Getting stuck in ”I don’t have what it takes” is an energy draining place. When this happens, look for proof in others that they have done exactly what you want to manifest and remember, they also started from zero once!
Practice great self talk
Set the tone daily by telling yourself every singel day that you are ready to learn and grow with the daily experiences. Tell yourself that you can do hard things and all it takes is for you to keep going, keep taking action and stay in the consistency lane!
